Are winters getting warmer?
نویسندگان
چکیده
We examine whether any trends in monthly temperatures are the same through-out the year for various lengthy series. The data concern the world, the northern and southern hemispheres, and about three centuries of data for the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. For the empirical exercise, we rely on new and accurate tests which have been recently developed. These tests do not have standard distributions, so that critical values have to be tabulated. The empirical findings include significant worldwide temperature increases, differences across months for the northern hemisphere, and warming winters for the UK and the Netherlands. 2004 Elsevier Ltd. Increase in body size is correlated to warmer winters in a passerine bird as inferred from time series data
Climate change is expected to affect natural populations in many ways. One way of getting an understanding of the effects of a changing climate is to analyze time series of natural populations. Therefore, we analyzed time series of 25 and 20 years, respectively, in two populations of the citril finch (Carduelis citrinella) to understand the background of a dramatic increase in wing length in th...
متن کاملWARMING WINTERS AND CHANGING HABITATS: INTERACTIVE EFFECTS ON RAPTOR POPULATIONS AND IMPLICATIONS FOR CONSERVATION By
Studies of multiple taxa across broad-scales suggest that species distributions are shifting poleward in response to global climate change. Understanding the influence of distribution shifts on regional population indices will be an important part of interpreting population trends within local management units because, compared to a time when distribution were less dynamic, changes in populatio...
متن کاملShort winters threaten temperate fish populations
Although climate warming is expected to benefit temperate ectotherms by lengthening the summer growing season, declines in reproductive success following short, warm winters may counter such positive effects. Here we present long-term (1973-2010) field patterns for Lake Erie yellow perch, Perca flavescens, which show that failed annual recruitment events followed short, warm winters. Subsequent...
متن کاملHow climate change might influence the starvation-predation risk trade-off response.
Climate change within the UK will affect winter starvation risk because higher temperatures reduce energy budgets and are likely to increase the quality of the foraging environment. Mass regulation in birds is a consequence of the starvation-predation risk trade-off: decreasing starvation risk because of climate change should decrease mass, but this will be countered by the effects of predation...
متن کاملClimate change and influenza: the likelihood of early and severe influenza seasons following warmer than average winters
The 2012-13 influenza season had an unusually early and severe start in the US, succeeding the record mild 2011-12 influenza season, which occurred during the fourth warmest winter on record. Our analysis of climate and past US influenza epidemic seasons between 1997-98 to present indicates that warm winters tend to be followed by severe epidemics with early onset, and that these patterns are s...
